November 4 – 8 will be a busy time for Mineola. The Fall Iron Horse Festival is the 7th, but from the 4th to the 8th will be the visit of the Veteran’s Memorial Wall. This is a smaller replica of the Viet Nam wall in Washington DC. This wall has the name of every one of our men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country. The wall features the names of these brave Americans from the Viet Nam war through current, including those who perished in the attacks of 9-11-2001.
From a patriotic standpoint, it is wonderful to have this attraction coming to town. From an economic standpoint, it is a huge boon. The smallest number of visitors the wall has received anywhere it has been is 25,000. The wall will make publicity stops in most surrounding towns before stopping in Mineola and being set up. The city of Mineola can honestly expect 25,000 up to 40,000 people over this 5 day period. Think about that. Even though most of these people will only be here for the day, that is a huge number of people for our town of 5611 residents. They will need somewhere to eat, somewhere to shop, somewhere to buy gas and many, many other things.
This wall is being brought to town by the Marine Corp League of Mineola. Cudos to this organization for taking the initiative to do this. Certainly their motivation in doing this is one of a patriotic nature. The economic impact is really only a side effect, but one that can bring a considerable amount of business to our town, not to mention the simple exposure of our town to many who might not have been here in a long time and might not realize that we offer as much as we do.
To the Marine Corp League, THANK YOU. To the people of Mineola, please be patient during these days because our town will be crowded and busy. To the merchants, restaurants, gas stations and other local businesses, BE READY!!
