The first halftime performance of the Mineola Yellow Jacket Band under the direction of Chris Brannan was met with a standing ovation Friday night. It was an encouraging sign for the award-winning director that looks to show Mineola and the band members themselves that the Yellow Jacket Band is its own entity and a Yellow Jacket force in its own right.

Guests started gathering at the new Jalapeno Tree before 10:30 Monday morning. By 11:00 the porch was full of hungry customers, eager to experience Mineola’s newest restaurant and bar. Owner Paul Bambrey and general manager Ralph Gonzalez were in the midst of the activity, ensuring patrons had a wonderful lunch.

The annual School Night for Scouting will be on Thursday evening at 7:00 pm at the Methodist Ministry Center. Parents and students will have the opportunity to learn about and register for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, or Girl Scouts.

The city council held a special retreat Saturday with city department heads. The overwhelming consensus seemed to be that development of the downtown area and the city’s parks would bring the most benefit to the city.

Stone Briar Center, Bringing New Business to Mineola

David Short realized that many people from Mineola go out of town to shop more than they shop in town, so he decided to do something about it. The Stone Briar Center shopping center is being erected to “bring that business back to Mineola.” Construction is expected to be completed in early September.

Mineola ISD 2013 STAAR Test Results Disappoint

One of the discussions at the last Mineola ISD board meeting was about the standardized test results for last year. Words like dismal and unacceptable were used by board members to describe some of the results. There were a few “bright spots,” as superintendent Dr. John Fuller put it, but the scores were disappointing when considered broadly.

Whitetails Unlimited Hosts Fundraiser Banquet

The Lake Country chapter of Whitetails Unlimited hosted a fundraiser banquet on Thursday, August 15. Monies raised will go to youth education and activities, and to process game meat to give to the needy. There were raffle items, including a table especially for kids, a silent auction, and a live auction.
