Young Library Patrons Build Robots

Mineola Primary teacher Stacy Wedding facilitated a robotics workshop for primary and elementary students at the Mineola Memorial Library on Wednesday afternoon. The workshop was a special session of “Dig Into Reading,” the summer children’s reading program at the library. The robots were built from LEGO┬«-style building blocks and run on power via USB cables connected to laptops that housed the program necessary to direct the action of each machine.

“Dig Into Reading” is a national summer reading program designed by The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP). The program encourages reading throughout the summer months to help prevent loss of reading skills in students. CSLP has expanded to include specialized program levels for early readers, children, teens, and adults. Mineola Memorial Library is participating in all levels of the program. The summer program meetings are Wednesday afternoons at 2:00 pm. The children meet with Mary Hurley in the Meredith Room at the library and the teens meet in the Genealogy room with Pam Hortman.
