Johnnie Bendy

From her decades of service to the community to her decades of teaching, most anyone local will know, or at least know of, Johnnie Bendy. She taught for a total of 38 years in our school system, 20 under the segregated system and another 18 years after desegregation.

Mrs. Bendy was born in Longview on 12-2-1918. She later married Rev. F.W. Bendy. She was a member of the Muddy Creek Baptist Church. She also served with the following organizations in our town for many years:

  • Business & Professional Auxiliary
  •  Mineola Planning and Zoning Board
  •  United Way Block Chairman
  •  Friends of the Mineola Library
  •  Mineola Historical Society
  •  Lake Country Playhouse

Mrs. Bendy was also instrumental in the historical development of the Mineola Nature Preserve.

We will have more details regarding her service arrangements as they become available.

Mrs. Bendy was my English teacher and she was the best. She always had word of wisdom to share with her class and individually. She was always respectful to others and always encouraging. Her favorite quote was “Never trouble, trouble till trouble, trouble you”. I never did quite understand that.

I loved going to the library because of her. She seemed to know each and every child’s likes and dislikes. She treated us all like we were the most important student when she talked with us or recommended a book. I try to do as she did in treating everyone the same…. the colorblind teacher….. loved her.
