The Commerce Street project is underway.
In an effort to recoup funds spent on the long-awaited Commerce Street overlay project, the Mineola city council voted Tuesday evening to place toll plazas on Commerce Street upon completion of the project.
Drivers will be charged 30 cents upon exiting Commerce St., with a pass-through toll set for a discounted rate of 20 cents.
After nearly an hour of contentious debate, council members voted 6-2 in favor of the toll plan over another option to recoup the funds, parking meters.
Construction of the toll plazas will be put out for bid immediately and should be complete by the end of May.
Authorities say the collection of tolls will begin July 1st.
