A Look at Mineola’s New City Park

September 17th, 2010 - - Posted by: The Buzz

I assume it will be called Magnolia Park, but I don’t know that. An historic home once stood here, but it burned months back. More on that here.

There is a lot of work to be done to make this nice, but the city of Mineola is committed to getting it done. This space has real potential as an amphitheater and general park. The Magnolia trees on the site are very old and huge. A section of the tree closest to the house was scorched in the fire but, according to tree experts, it will live through the ordeal.

Special thanks to the Campos’s, the previous owners of the house whose generosity made this possble.

Second Play by Local Artist Set to Open

June 29th, 2010 - - Posted by: The Buzz

Mathew Brian first brought us The Flicker King in 2009. This was a tale of intrigue, deception, things that go bump in the night and just about everything else that could go wrong in a person’s life.

Now Mathew is back. This time it is Crying Wolves, a tale of two friends, each with an uncontrollable and over-the-top desire to prove to prove they are the best prankster. Of course there are many twists and turns along the way. There are even a few lessons on life, at least according to the twisted sense of humor of Mat Brian. I was fortunate to have read an early copy of this script. I know it has changed since it was originally written, but I can almost guarantee you that it still contains some wild antics and humor that will make you laugh hysterically and maybe, maybe even provoke a thought or two. OK, so they might not be the deepest thoughts in the world, but a thought is a thought and that is what the theater is supposed to do.

This new show opens July 1st and is performed in the studio located directly above B&B’s Legal Grounds Coffee Shop on N. Johnson St. in Mineola. The poster below contains the dates, times and method of making reservations. Feel free to bring your cooler of beer or a bottle of wine… or two. What you do NOT want to bring are your small children or a stuffy attitude. This play requires an adult sense of humor and the willingness to let loose for a few hours and enjoy whatever it is that you might be in for.

You’ll like it. I promise!

Warehouse of Terror Up an Running

October 12th, 2009 - - Posted by: The Buzz

Mineola’s Warehouse of Terror opened Saturday, October 10th with a bang. The cold, drizzly night didn’t keep a good number of people from getting the bejeezus scared out of them.

The Warehouse of Terror runs every Friday and Saturday night from now through Halloween. The attraction is a quality haunted house. Expect a good half hour or more to get through it completely.

This is one of the main fund raisers for the Lake Country Playhouse. Without the Warehouse of Terror, the Lake Country Playhouse would not be able to bring the area the quality performances that it can. It is staffed entirely by volunteers, yet this is one of the most professional haunted houses you will ever go through. Every year we have repeat visitors come night after night, bringing friends, relatives and neighbors with them.

This year there are four updated scenes in the Warehouse of Terror, so come on out and see what we have in store for you. Bring a friend. Better yet, bring three friends.

The Warehouse of Terror is located on US 80 East, one block east of Hwy 69, behind Robinson’s Furniture. The fun starts on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00 PM and goes until 11:00 PM.

Admission is still only $12. Bring two cans of non-perishable food and your entry is only $10. All food items go to the Kindness Cottage.

For more information or to volunteer, call 903-569-2300 or visit LakeCountryPlayhouse.org.

Mineola Museum of Transportation and History

July 28th, 2009 - - Posted by: The Buzz

This museum doesn’t open until September, but we got a sneak peek and decided to share it with you. The museum has been in the works in one stage or another for nearly ten years. Through a generous grant from the Meredith Foundation, the museum has gained new life and is nearly completed.

Anyone who was raised in Mineola or anyone who is a history buff is sure to love the museum. It is chocked full of displays, re-creations and photos from Mineola’s colorful history. The people who put this museum together have spent literally thousands of hours working on it.

As you watch the video, keep in mind that this is a sneak peek and the museum is still a work in progress.

The museum will be free and open to the public but will accept donations. It will also act as the Tourist and Information Center.

Mineola Gypsy Market is a Huge Success

July 26th, 2009 - - Posted by: The Buzz

The first ever Mineola Gypsy Market was Saturday, July 25th and it was a screaming success.

This event was spearheaded by a few downtown merchants who wanted to stir up some commerce while creating a fun and friendly environment for people to enjoy. They did just that and they did it well. The market was packed with vendors selling all kinds of things, including tasty treats of many kinds. There was a lot to do for anyone. They had a bounce house for the kids, a dunking booth, train rides, live music and lots more.

The three main people behind this event were Darrell Blaine, Mellissa Till and Johnny Taylor. All three of them, and all others involved, did a fantastic job of organizing this event and making it fun.

The weather cooperated. It was July 25th in Texas, so we knew we weren’t going to have 70 degree perfect weather, but the highs were in the low 90s and the day came with a nice breeze, so it was really quite comfortable as a late July day goes in Texas.

Great job in putting this together folks. The Mineola Gypsy Market could easily become a major event in Mineola in coming years.
