Help Mineola Keep our Sales Taxes Local

September 1st, 2010
Posted by: The Buzz

There is an initiative afoot that will be a real boon to the city of Mineola. It would allow stores in the Mineola city limits to sell beer and wine and allow restaurants to have a full bar. The initiative has been filed with the state and will soon be available for those in support to sign the petition to bring it to a vote.

Our city loses lots of tax dollars due to our inability to serve the public. People will drink beer and wine, so why keep on allowing other communities to extract tax dollars from Mineola that we need?

Keep an eye open for this petition at local grocery and department stores over the coming few months. If you are in support, sign it and be sure to vote for it when it does make the ballot.

Be Careful Where You Get Your Prescriptions Filled

August 16th, 2010

Back in January of this year I got a prescription filled at Wal Mart. It was $50.78. A little curiosity and a few phone calls produced a surprise when I found the identical drug, dosage and quantity at Kelly Drug in Mineola for $10. Upon contacting Wal Mart, I was told to go to Kelly Drug, get it in writing and bring that to Wal Mart. At that point they would match the price. I didn’t do that. I consider it ridiculous for them to demand that of a customer in order to get a fair price.
Fast forward to 7 months later when a different prescription at Wal Mart that costs $26 and change costs $17 and change at Kelly Drug.
Wal Mart spends billions of ad dollars conditioning people to think that they have the lowest price when they indeed do not. In my experiences it isn’t even close.
For what it’s worth, I have no affiliation with either of the two pharmacies mentioned and am not endorsing a particular pharmacy, but instead giving objective information on prices.
In a phone call to the Wal Mart pharmacy asking for the pharmacy manager, I was told they do not have one.
Again I will not jump through Wal Mart’s hoops to get the price I should have, but I learned a lesson here. Never again Wal Mart pharmacy!

Second Play by Local Artist Set to Open

June 29th, 2010

Mathew Brian first brought us The Flicker King in 2009. This was a tale of intrigue, deception, things that go bump in the night and just about everything else that could go wrong in a person’s life.

Now Mathew is back. This time it is Crying Wolves, a tale of two friends, each with an uncontrollable and over-the-top desire to prove to prove they are the best prankster. Of course there are many twists and turns along the way. There are even a few lessons on life, at least according to the twisted sense of humor of Mat Brian. I was fortunate to have read an early copy of this script. I know it has changed since it was originally written, but I can almost guarantee you that it still contains some wild antics and humor that will make you laugh hysterically and maybe, maybe even provoke a thought or two. OK, so they might not be the deepest thoughts in the world, but a thought is a thought and that is what the theater is supposed to do.

This new show opens July 1st and is performed in the studio located directly above B&B’s Legal Grounds Coffee Shop on N. Johnson St. in Mineola. The poster below contains the dates, times and method of making reservations. Feel free to bring your cooler of beer or a bottle of wine… or two. What you do NOT want to bring are your small children or a stuffy attitude. This play requires an adult sense of humor and the willingness to let loose for a few hours and enjoy whatever it is that you might be in for.

You’ll like it. I promise!

Francisca’s Pizza - Good Pizza… Delivered!!

June 25th, 2010
Posted by: The Buzz

The days of the pizza monopoly in Mineola are gone. Francisca’s Pizza, located next to Ranchero, is now open and delivering good pizza to your home. The crust they use is the closest thing to New York style pizza that I have seen since I moved here. It is tasty, has just a little bit of brown on the bottom and a good consistency.

Considering the fact that there has only been one place to get pizza in Mineola for some time and the fact that nobody delivers, this is quite a breakthrough for our town.

Right now you can get two large pizzas with unlimited toppings and a 2 liter soda delivered to your door for $19.95

Francisca’s also has:

  • Wings
  • Calzone
  • Pizza by the slice
  • Salad

They are open and deliver Monday through Thursday from 11 AM to 9 PM and Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 10 PM.

Delivery - Drive thru - Dine in

This is a locally owned and managed business, not a corporate restaurant that cuts corners because they are the only pizza place in town. Support them. Call today!

APET’s Walk-A-Thon Saturday 4/24/10

April 19th, 2010
Posted by: APET

Come Have Fun With Your Children/Grandchildren…

(or you are welcome to participate yourself!)

as they walk their dogs around the Mineola Civic Center for charity!

What:  The Woofin’ Waggin’ Walk-A-Thon

The walk will be led by Gumbo the Poodle http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mineola-TX/Gumbo-the-Poodle/35103014567

When: Saturday, April 24, 9:30 AM (Registration 9:00 – 9:30)

Where: Mineola Civic Center

Full details are available at http://www.apetspca.org/events/walk-a-thon

Permission Slip (required for all minors) is available at http://apetspca.org/ps.pdf

Pledges Collected Log is available at http://apetspca.org/pclog.pdf

Prizes & Giveaways: All participants will receive a giveaway.  All participants with at least $10 in donations will receive an APET ball cap.  And the walker with the most donations will receive a $100 Savings Bond donated by The Mineola Community Bank.  Second runner up will receive a $50 gift certificate donated by the Mineola Walmart.

Can’t join us?  How about sponsoring Gumbo (no, he is not eligible for the prizes).  Go to http://www.apetspca.org/donate and enter “Gumbo” in the purpose section of the donation form.  Any amount would be greatly appreciated.

Briefly: This is an individual competition for school-aged kids (this is much like the parameters used for Walk for the Cure and Paws for the Cause). Participants are asked to approach neighbors, friends, relatives, church members, stores or where ever and ask to be sponsored to walk their dog for this charity event. A donation is any amount the sponsor can donate. Donations are all tax deductible. Students will need to collect the donation at the time that the “pledge” is made (donor requested receipts can be provided at the time the donation is submitted at the event). Collections should be retained in an envelope. Cash is preferable, but if a sponsor wishes they can write a check made payable to APET SPCA. A sheet will be provided to the students to list the names and contribution amounts of the sponsors. These forms, the envelope of money and a Permission Slip/Waiver signed by parent(s) allowing participation will be required at registration the morning of the event. Parents/grandparents and school personnel will be greatly encouraged to participate, and the event will be written up in the Mineola Monitor. They and a local TV station may be on hand as well. Volunteers will line the periphery of the Civic Center to hand out water, monitor safety and walkers and hand out bags to collect pet droppings. The actual walk is approximately one mile.

Remember: Supporting APET initiatives is just giving back to the community.
